Plant soil correlation study
Plant soil correlation study station number 6 on Jornada. Vegetation is composed of 40 percent Larrea glutinosa, 30 percent Flourensia ceruna, 15 percent Ephedra trifurea, 8 percent Yucca sp., 1 percent Muhlenbergia porterii, and 1 percent Bouteloua eriopoda. The average density is .15 and the forage acre factor .01. The vegetation within an adjacent plot, which has been protected since 1912, is composed of 60 percent Bouteloua eriopoda, 15 percent Muhlenbergia porterii, 5 percent Ephedra trifurea, 4 percent Flourensia ceruna, 3 percent Yucca elata, and 3 percent Larrea glutinosa. The average density is .30 and the forage acre factor is .16. The soil is shallow gravelly loamy fine sand, developed on Bolson fan deposits and has a well cemented gravel face. Slope gradient is 2 percent. Micro-relief has been produced by erosion and deposition. It consists of poorly expressed drainage channels, 2 to 3 inches deep and 4 to 12 inches wide, and of fine sand accumulations around plants, ranging in height to 8 inches. Wind erosion is slight both outside and inside, while the sheet erosion is moderate with occasional rills on the outside and only slight inside the plot. Original photo number 309.
