Sporobolus flexuosus root habit
Sporobolus flexuosus root habit. View from surface downward showing general root habit of Sporobolus flexuosus. This grass is an indicator of slight degree of over-utilization and abuses in black grama pastures. It has a few poorly developed roots immediately below the surface. Black grama with its profusely branched roots permeating the soil immediately under the surface readily crowds out this species and becomes the climax because of its more efficiently absorptive root system. The climax species, however, is very palatable and is quickly weakened by grazing. It is first followed by Sporobolus flexuosus. Original photo number 159.
